Tallship is an informal collective term for some kinds of sailing ships. Contrary to other sailing ship classification terms, tallship does not describe a particular kind of sailing ship identified by a sail plan - both barques and brigantines, for instance, are tallships.
A tallship is a large traditionally rigged sailing boat. Popular modern tallship rigs include topsail schooners, brigantines, brigs and barques.

Scarano Boat, Inc.

In the passenger sail vessel arena, Scarano has set the standard for aesthetic, structural, maintenance, and sailing performance. Such designs incorporate the sophisticated application of pertinent structural standards, and the use of a variety of materials including wood, composites (epoxy, glass, carbon fiber), aluminum and steel.
Since 1989, Scarano has been using in-house computerized 3D hull definition software utilizing surfacing and hydrostatics, as well as intact and damaged stability.
Scarano facility is located on the west side of the Hudson River south of Albany, New York. The river is navigable by ocean going ships with drafts to 30 ft and height clearance of 135-ft. Our buildings have a total of 90,000 sq. ft. of enclosed space providing for a complete range of marine construction and repair services. The main shops are fully insulated and heated. The shops are equipped with overhead cranes and are accessible by our 150 ton Marine Travel Lift. They are 140-ft. long, 65-ft. wide and 35-ft. high. Our travel lift accomodates up to 30-ft. beam and 120-ft. length. We also have a 50-ton boom crane. Specialty shops include wood millwork, cabinetry, frame laminating, fiberglass fabrication, electrical, quality control testing lab, metal fabrication and machine shop. Our indoor boat storage space is 50,000-sq. ft.
Scarano sail vessel rigs have included aluminum, wood, and carbon fiber spars. Scarano pioneered the use of kevlar shrouds for standing rigging on classically rigged vessels in order to give the historically faithful appearance of hemp cordage.
Knowledge and skill in performance design have been demonstrated by numerous first-place finishes (by four different Scarano designs) and elapsed time course record (set by Adirondack in 1994) in the Great Chesapeake Schooner Race series. Superior performance relative to other vessels in many traditional yachting events has been demonstrated by Scarano designs even while incorporating the various restrictions and requirements of USCG certification to carry passengers.
In the passenger power vessel arena, Scarano designs have ranged from scow-type cost-effective designs in steel, such as Big Kahuna, to more sophisticated designs, such as Horicon and Lexington, which offer the dock-side appeal and interior charm required to satisfy the most discriminating guests.
25 years of boat design and 950 tons displacement (comprising 15 vessels) of USCG certified vessel design/build projects. Understanding of practical testing and quality control procedures (particularly for contracts with the US Navy and National Park Service) enable Scarano Boat to monitor and ensure structural integrity throughout the construction process.
From small, high-performance racing sailboats to historic full-rigged ship replicas, to period-styled charter schooners, or even steel crane barges and party boats, we offer a rare range of successful previous design experience to execute your custom project in laminated wood, composite, or metal.
